Media Release: Hitting the Road to Build Australia's Future

10 April 2025

Labor’s Queensland Senate team will hit the road to cover more than 650 kilometres across the State over the next two days, to hear from locals and highlight the risk of Peter Dutton's Campbell Newman-style public service cuts.

Current Queensland Labor Senators, Murray Watt, Anthony Chisholm and Nita Green will join Senate Candidate Corinne Mulholland to visit Caboolture, the Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Maryborough, Bundaberg, Calliope and Rockhampton.

These towns and communities rely on strong public services, which are now at risk from Peter Dutton cutting 41,000 public service jobs.

Queensland Senator Nita Green will lead Labor’s charge on the Senate ticket at next month’s federal election, with Corinne Mulholland aiming to re-take the second position lost six years ago.

Queenslanders are currently represented by 4 Liberal National representatives, 3 from Labor, 2 from One Nation, 2 from the Greens and 1 Independent in the Senate chamber.

The result has seen crossbenchers in the 47th Parliament stall important legislation from being passed, including critical housing measures.

Australians struggling with housing pressures watched on in frustration as Labor’s critical housing legislation was delayed for months due to the Greens and Senate crossbench playing political games.

Independent Senator Gerard Rennick and One Nation’s Malcolm Roberts teamed up with the LNP and the Greens to delay over $10 billion of funding for Housing, keeping legislation in limbo for over 6 months.

They then teamed up with the Greens again to block Labor’s legislation to help 40,000 Australians buy a home – delaying that by nine months.

Queensland’s LNP Senators also voted against Labor’s cost of living relief measures, as well as measures to lift wages, criminalise wage theft and close the Same Job, Same Pay loophole.

Quotes attributable to Senator for Queensland, Murray Watt:

“This road trip is just one way we’re getting out and about to talk to Queenslanders about what matters most to them.

“It’s also about letting people know what the Senate can do for them and how those votes matter.

“Senator Green has a strong track record for standing up for Queenslanders in the Senate, and I know Corinne Mulholland would be a great addition if Queenslanders vote Labor in the Senate.”

Quotes attributable to Senator for Queensland, Anthony Chisholm:

“I sit at the end of Labor’s Senate frontbench and there hasn’t been a single day when I haven’t looked at those opposite or down at the end of the Chamber and shaken my head.

“Queensland deserves to have Senators in Canberra who actually represent their interests, not take crazy ideas from the internet and bring them on to the Senate floor.

“They’ll get this commonsense leadership from Nita and Corinne.”

Quotes attributable to Senator for Queensland, Nita Green:

“My first term in the Senate has taught me a lot, but above all, it’s taught me that we need representatives in the Senate who take the struggles of working regional Queenslanders seriously.

“Despite the crossbench’s antics and distractions, our government has delivered costing living relief, lasting institutional reform and has laid the groundwork to build a better future for our country.

“Over the course of this road trip, we’ll be taking Labor’s positive plan to build Australia’s future to the regional communities that will play a major role in this plan.”

Quotes attributable to Labor Senate Candidate for Queensland, Corinne Mulholland:

“Queensland is a big state and deserves representation from Senators who are ready to take real action on cost of living and public services, not hold things up for political point-scoring like we saw last term.

“I’m really looking forward to being out on the road speaking with voters and urging them to vote for Labor’s common-sense approach to our state’s Senate representation, something that I know I can bring to Parliament.”
